You take white vinegar and dampen a bunch of sawdust with it, then you dip your metal in salt water, and bury it in the damp sawdust. It only takes about a day or so. I think it works with copper or brass. If you hover the metal on a screen over ammonia, it turns blue. I haven't tried that one though.
